The Kenny Gross Project

Updated: 05-14.07

The Kenny Gross Project is my attempt to preserve and archive, as far as possible as much of Kenny's work as I can. Kenny wrote over 700 songs during his lifetime. My goal is to gather, into one place, recordings of at least 100 unique, original compositions. Due to bandwidth and monetary considerations, you won't find those recordings here; I just can't afford that kind of disk space. I'm hoping to have a list along with a few MP3 samples.

I expect to be archiving in .wav format. Unlike networked storage, big, local hard disks are cheap and I have well over 100 gigs set aside for the purpose. Eventually, I'll burn the songs to DVD. Once I have a .wav file of each tape/side, I'll make MP3 and/or OGG copies of the tunes for distribution. See the catalog of Kenny's tunes for more information.

Jeff Coleman came up with a rough cassette of Kenny doing 'Mental Illness' the other week and I realized that there were a lot of Kenny's songs that fall into the 'I remember them but I don't have a recording of them' category. So I decided I'd make a list and if anyone has copies of these tunes with or without legible words, please consider sending a copy my way:

  • Apolitical
  • Tell Me What's Wrong With Suicide
  • Fart Stains
  • The Duck Song
  • White Rock
  • Elephant on a Rampage

03-01-05 The King of Clubs. I've put together my first Kenny CD ... it's from a tape that JC loaned to me. This CD includes 19, count 'em 19 tracks, not one of them shorter than one minute forty-five.

Thrill to such hits as 'Anti-Anti','Dick Clark','The Halloween Song' or 'One Kiss'!!

BUT WAIT -- there's MORE!! such standards as : 'Mad At Me','Ugly Girls','Country Roads' Or the ever popular 'I Won't Fool Around No More'! And what High School Prom would be complete without 'Crooner Kenny' pouring on the charm like warm syrup in 'Valentine Song' and 'The Hurting'???

All of these hits can be yours! Just send me your name and mailing address and I'll get one out to you just as soon as I can. If you prefer MP3s, let me know that, too as I can fit a lot more on a CD! [Click on the album cover for King of Clubs liner notes].

Ripping Gear

I've got a PentiumIII/600 Mhz on an Asus Motherboard with 768Megs of ram and approximately 120GB hard disk space. The machine has a Soundblaster Live card (EMU10K) getting it's input from a twin Sony cassette deck. I'm running the Open-Source sound program Audacity on top of Fedora (Core 2) Linux.

Thanks ....

Thank you so far to Dave Gross and his wonderful family, Beth Kenyon, Jeff and Bonnie Coleman, Laura Witmyer, Hannah and Allyson Gross, Tommy Leanza, Dave Brown, J.C.Fetlock, Pat Kuhns, George Ziegler, Brian Melsom, Steve McCann, Anya Deva and to everyone who I've spoken with, personally or by email during the pursuit of this project.

Kenny played for thousands of folks, mostly up and down the east coast. He played in five bands that I've been able to document and probably more. Folks who heard him and played with him, including myself, made tapes of that music. Most notably Jeff Coleman at Steam-Powered Studio got Kenny, during the early eighties to come to his studio in Paradise and record thirteen tracks, which remain the definitive Kenny recordings to date.

PSYCHO-KENNY-GROSS. Kenny's friend Anya Deva has put together some great photos and remembrances, and some beautiful poignant poetry. There is also a really cool graphic of KG.

If you like this site and would like to contribute a story or picture or song or whatever, please don't hesitate to send me an email at dave@davecrossley.net. I enjoy corresponding with folks ... about Kenny, about music, about Rock and Roll or anything else.
